Our Commitment

At Project Habitation we believe good design must respond to place, climate and people, not just trends or aesthetics. Sustainability sits at the core of how we work, and we see it as an essential responsibility in every project, not an optional add-on. This commitment is reflected in how we approach each home, from its position on the site through to how it performs day-to-day over decades.

Sustainable Design Principles

We integrate sustainability into our work by considering long-term comfort, energy use, resource conservation and environmental impact from the earliest stages of design. These include:

Climate-Responsive Design

We design homes specifically for their climate and site, using orientation, shading, natural ventilation and thermal performance as key tools to enhance comfort and reduce reliance on mechanical systems. Good passive design can significantly reduce energy use for heating and cooling over the life of a home.

Energy Efficiency

Our designs prioritise energy efficiency, reducing ongoing energy demand through intelligent planning, insulation, quality detailing and integration of efficient systems where appropriate.

Water and Resource Responsibility

We consider water conservation strategies, efficient fittings and integrated systems that support reduced consumption and mindful use of resources throughout a home’s life.

Site and Landscape Integrity

We respect the natural context of every site. This includes protecting significant trees and landscape features where possible, and making design decisions that enhance biodiversity, landscape character and environmental health.

Materials and Longevity

We prioritise durable, low-impact, and regionally appropriate materials. Material choices are informed by performance, longevity and environmental impact, with consideration given to embodied energy and suitability for local conditions.

Design Ethics

Our ethical approach reflects how we engage with clients, communities and the broader environment:

Client-Centred Design

We listen carefully to understand how you live and what matters most to you. Our work is grounded in honest assessment, clear communication and solutions that support practical, long-term outcomes.

Transparency & Integrity

We aim for clarity in costs, timelines and design decisions. We are direct about trade-offs between budget, sustainability, aesthetics and performance so clients can make informed choices.

Responsibility to Environment & Neighbourhood

Our designs seek to minimise negative impacts on neighbours and communities while contributing positively to local character and liveability.

Professional Integrity

We accept projects that align with our values and capabilities and seek specialist input when appropriate. We support continuous learning in best practice climate responsive design.

Our Pledge

We pledge to:

  1. Prioritise sustainability in every design decision.

  2. Educate clients on how sustainable design contributes to comfort, performance and long-term value.

  3. Continually improve our understanding of environmental good practice.

  4. Be frank about trade-offs between cost, aesthetics and sustainable performance.

  5. Promote mindful resource use in how we run our own business.
